Spanish Grammar Books

spanish grammar books Learning Spanish grammar may not be the most exciting thing in the world but it is an essential part of learning the language. Whether you are taking Spanish classes, working with a tutor, or studying on your own, you'll need a good grammar book.

On this page I've described some of the books that I found most helpful when I was learning Spanish.

Spanish the Easy Way

My favorite Spanish grammar book is Barron's Spanish the Easy Way. I learned a ton of grammar and vocabulary from this book. What impressed me most is that the explanations are clear and the exercises are enjoyable. For me, this book really did make studying Spanish grammar effortless and fun.

Practice Makes Perfect

Dorothy Richmond has written two Practice Makes Perfect exercise books, one is called Spanish Verb Tenses and the other Spanish Pronouns and Prepositions. I did all the exercises in both books and they helped me immensely. If you are the kind of person who likes doing written exercises and learns well through repetition, I think you will like these books.

501 Spanish Verbs

501 Spanish Verbs by Barron's isn't a grammar book, it's actually a reference book that gives full conjugations of the 501 most used Spanish verbs. After a good Spanish-English dictionary, I believe this is the next most important reference book for a Spanish student.

The Ultimate Spanish Review and Practice

The Ultimate Spanish Review and Practice, published by Passport Books, is a comprehensive review of Spanish grammar for intermediate and advanced students. There's a lot of excellent information in this book. I only wish they had provided more space to do the exercises. Also, some of the topics seem to be out of order. For example, the subjunctive is covered well before much simpler topics such as nouns and pronouns.

Practical Spanish Grammar

Practical Spanish Grammar: A Self-teaching Guide by Marcial Prado is popular Spanish grammar book used by a lot of Spanish schools. It's a useful textbook.

I was a little disappointed, however, with the second book in this series, Advanced Spanish Grammar. I didn't find the book to be geared to advanced students, as implied by the title. It's probably better suited to intermediate students.
